Statement from the SDB President on Recent Events

2/11/2025

Dear SDB Trainees and Junior Faculty,

We acknowledge that recent events and policy changes are unsettling—even frightening—especially for those in the early stages of their careers. Please know that the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a welcoming, supportive environment for all aspiring scientists. We believe that a wide range of perspectives and life experiences strengthens our scientific community and drives the most innovative discoveries.

Your voice matters, and SDB is committed to providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities to help each of you thrive—no matter your background or path into science. We will continue to promote a culture of respect and shared learning, and remain firm in our belief that genuine progress—in both research and society—thrives when all aspiring scientists are empowered to contribute their unique talents. Your contributions are essential to advancing the frontiers of knowledge, and we will continue to cultivate an environment where every perspective is valued and heard.

With appreciation and resolve,

Carole LaBonne, PhD
SDB President
On Behalf of the SDB Board of Directors
