New Faculty Boot Camp
Overview
The New Faculty Boot Camp (NFBC) is a 12-week blended learning course offered by the Society for Developmental Biology. Ideal for pre-tenure faculty within the first three years of starting their position and advanced postdoctoral fellows who have accepted a job offer. Course participants will learn how to:
- Plan for success
- Develop as leaders
- Manage time, projects, and people
- Find and secure funding
- Grow as teachers and mentors
In addition, one of the main goals of this course is to foster a supportive community of practice, building relationships with colleagues going through the same or similar experiences.
This course includes reading and writing assignments as well as expert advice from leaders in diverse fields including business, academia, and developmental biology. During live sessions, course participants will workshop their lab manuals and grant ideas, share goals and experiences, and practice difficult conversations. Active participation including asynchronous writing assignments and attendance a live Zoom sessions is required.

- Meet regularly with your cohort and facilitator via Zoom
- Get peer feedback, support, and expert advice from people in your discipline
- Stay connected with your cohort, share ideas, and support each other
- Learn how to establish an inclusive scientific culture in your lab
- Craft a comprehensive lab manual

New Faculty Boot Camp Intern Needed
Internship Application Deadline: Thursday, August 15
We are excited to announce an internship opportunity to support SDB’s New Faculty Boot Camp.
Eligibility
- Senior graduate student (4th year and up) and postdoc members of the Society for Developmental Biology are eligible.
Benefits to the intern
- Network with new junior faculty taking the course and their faculty instructors
- Gain experience in e-course development and delivery
- Get a sneak peek on what it takes to be a new faculty
- An outstanding general professional development opportunity
- $500 to attend the SDB Annual Meeting
Duties of the intern
- Support the technical side of course delivery (e.g. Zoom calls) during online sessions
- Communicate with course participants
- Support the instructors during the course, which will run every other week from late August/early September onwards (detailed schedule still to be determined)
- At completion of the course, assist with identifying and curating new content for the next iteration. The internship will therefore run for a total of 6 months.
The deadline for all application materials, including a letter of recommendation from your advisor, is Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. Recommendation letter writers should send their letters to SDB at sdb@sdbonline.org.
