Information About SDB 7th Boot Camp for New Faculty

SDB 7th Boot Camp for New Faculty
Reed College, Portland, OR

July 19-20, 2018

Boot Camp Drill Sergeants: Kara Cerveny (Reed College) and Randy Daughters (Macalester College)

This Boot Camp is designed for developmental biologists at a relatively early stage of their careers, primarily pre-tenure faculty and advanced postdoctoral fellows about to enter their first academic position.

The goals of the Boot Camp are to introduce best practices on effective teaching, mentoring, and grant writing, and to explore a variety of resources for developmental biology courses and course-based research experiences, including hands-on sessions with a variety of established and emerging model organisms. The camp is offered biennially by SDB’s Professional Development and Education Committee (PDEC) with partial support from SDB’s official journal, Developmental Biology.

This year, Reed College and its Biology Department, will host the Boot Camp and provide meeting space and lab facilities. There will be ample opportunity for networking with both junior and more established developmental biology colleagues from both primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) as well as more research-focused R2 and R1 institutions.

The Camp begins on the morning of July 19th and ends with lunch on the 20th of July. Capacity for the camp is 20 and participation is restricted to current SDB members. The Camp is offered free of charge and recruits may request housing reimbursement for up to two nights. A limited amount of travel assistance is also available through the SDB Teaching/Junior Faculty Travel Grant (Deadline is April 16). Please see the tentative agenda for the 2018 New Faculty Boot Camp and submit the completed Application form no later than May 14, 2018.
