2002 SDB Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting

Education Symposium For D.C.Area Teachers

The Society for Developmental Biology's 2002 Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting will include a special session for teachers in the Greater Washington Area on Friday (4/19). Subject to approval by the DC Public School System (DCPS), teachers who are participants of the DC ACTS program that attend the entire session will receive credits towards their professional development requirement. Teachers from other school districts will be invited as well, but registration priority in the lab sessions will be given to DC teachers. The laboratory activities are more appropriate for middle and high school levels, though elementary school teachers could adapt them for lower grades.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

8:00 AM - Registration/coffee

8:25 AM - Welcome and Introduction: Ida Chow (Society for Developmental Biology) and John Doctor (Duquesne University), co-chairs

8:30 AM - "Developmental Biology, Genome and Animal Models" Scott Gilbert (Swarthmore College)

9:00 AM - Lab Activities (rotating, limited to 30 participants; handouts including concepts and activities that follow DCPS' Science Standards will be distributed)

A. Regeneration in the Californian blackworm - Karen Crawford (St. Mary's College of Maryland)

B. Tissue engineering - John Doctor (Duquesne University)

C. Comparative developmental biology - Ida Chow and additional scientists/postdocs from the area who will serve as a resource for the teachers after the session.

12:30 PM - Lunch and Discussion: box lunch provided

1:45 PM - Regional Meeting Plenary Symposium on "Model systems in developmental biology and medicine" Teachers are strongly encouraged to stay for this special session of more general interest. There will be research talks on topics related to cancer, stem cells and human birth defects.

3:30 PM - Break 4:00 PM - Regional Meeting Session I. Teachers also will be invited to attend any of the remaining scientific sessions.
