NSF Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE)

This program considers proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports. For this year, proposals must focus on improving ethics education for graduate students in those fields, and on ethical issues that arise in research or graduate research education in those fields, particularly in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts.  Full Proposal Deadline:  March 10, 2005

NSF Multi-User Equipment and Instrumentation Resources for Biological Sciences (MUE)

Program aimed at helping the purchase of expensive items of research equipment to be shared by a number of independent investigators who have actively-funded research projects in areas supported by the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO). Proposals may request aid in the purchase of a single item of research equipment or of several items if they constitute an integrated system, including any necessary software; two or more unrelated equipment items may not be requested with one proposal. The minimum request is $40,000, and the maximum is $400,000.  Target date: July 6, 2005

NSF Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Supplement to Current NSF Awards

The BIO Directorate strongly encourages all its grantees to make special efforts to identify talented K-12 teachers who can participate in this RET-supplement opportunity to integrate research and education. A RET can be requested as a supplement to an existing NSF award or as part of a new or renewal NSF proposal.

NIGMS Biocomplexity Supplements

NIGMS reannounces its Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) initiative

MIDAS currently consists of a centralized informatics resource and a network of three groups of multidisciplinary scientists conducting computational and mathematical research to improve the ability to detect, control, and prevent emerging infectious diseases. Such diseases could be caused by naturally occurring or intentionally released pathogens, including those relevant to biodefense.

This reannouncement seeks to expand the scope and expertise of the MIDAS network by adding up to three new pilot projects (but not a new informatics group) using the cooperative agreement (U01) mechanism.

NIH Stem Cell Research Fellowships

NIH announces a program of fellowships in human embryonic stem cell research.  The program will support postdoctoral fellows who show promise for becoming independent investigators in human embryonic stem cell-related research as well as established scientists who wish to acquire new capabilities for studying human embryonic stem cells.
