Cuban
scientist, Ana Sanz Ochotorena of the University of
Havana, was awarded the final Latin
American-Caribbean Short Visit Grant by the Society
for Developmental Biology. This discontinued program
facilitated travel of Latin American investigators
to laboratories based in the United States and
Canada to learn developmental biology techniques and
approaches that would further research at their home
institution.

The
John Doctor
Education Prize (formally a best education
poster award) is now a best education video
award. We challenge SDB members to produce
short videos on their approach to teaching
difficult-to-learn developmental biology topics
to an undergraduate, graduate, or lay public
audience. This year's developmental biology
topic theme is "Model Organisms". See guidelines
here.
Submission deadline is
May 15, 2017.
The
SDB community mourns the loss of former board member
Catherine E. Krull who passed away February 28, 2017
after a long illness. Krull, an associate professor
at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry,
studied motor axon pathfinding in the chick hindlimb
and perfected in ovo electroporation techniques in
the chick. As a postdoc, Krull identified Eph signaling as an
inhibitor of neural crest cell migration. She served
as both the Junior Faculty Representative
(2002-2004) and Midwest Representative (2006-2008)
on the SDB Board of Directors, taught at the LASDB
short course in Argentina, and was a fixture at
the Marine Biological Laboratory Embyrology Course
for years. A tribute to Cathy Krull will be
published in an upcoming issue of Developmental
Biology.
