Developmental Biology Teaching Lab Workshop
Long-time SDB member, Leland Johnson, will lead an intensive workshop on The Developmental Biology Teaching Laboratory at the Darling Marine Center, University of Maine.  This workshop designed for ten college and university faculty members, including and specially post-docs and graduate students about to begin teaching developmental biology, provides basic hands-on experience with some organisms commonly studied in teaching laboratories.  These include sea urchins and sand dollars, chick embryos, Spirostomum, sponges, Hydra, planaria, Lumbriculus, and ferns.  Eric Cole once again will lead a session on fluorescence microscopy emphasizing applications to early sea urchin and sand dollar development.  This course also has proven useful for experienced developmental biology teachers wishing to diversify their laboratory courses.  Well over one hundred colleagues from across the US and Canada have participated during past summers.

There is considerable sharing of techniques and ideas among participants as well as informal socializing and a course-ending New England lobster dinner.
The University of Maine's Darling Marine Center is located on the scenic Damariscotta River estuary sixty miles northeast of Portland.  It is close to Freeport and is about two hours from Acadia National Park.  The workshop is held in the Center's excellent waterfront conference facilities.  Cost: $450 DMC course fee plus optional on-campus room and board.
